Summarizing is Important since it benefits the student and the Teacher
For the Student:
It provides the opportunity to communicate what is important
It a great way for understanding
It provides practice in decision making and analyzing
For the Teacher:
Indicator of comprehension
Reveals the student's ability to analyze
It provides evidence of the student's ability to select important information
Examples of Summarizing Methods
Focus on the heart of the matter
Write the main ideas
Seek key words and phrases that captures the main idea
Support the main ideas with details
Note taking is an effective strategy that teachers use to support the student and learning content.
Note taking helps students that struggle remembering the lesson. An example is the teacher giving a lecture of European history and its main events. Students can write down the most important events that happen at European history. This is accomplished since students have to listen to their teachers, and what the teacher has to teach. Students have to listen effectively and analyze the information that was provided, and then rewriting it in their own words. Students benefit from later going home and reviewing their notes to remember the main points from the lecture.
